Bury Market
Bury Market is an open-air market in the town centre of Bury, Greater Manchester, England, and is certainly one of the best traditional markets in the country. It consists of a large market hall, with extensive stalls outside, selling fruit, flowers, clothing, hardware, groceries and crystals. A new fish and meat market hall was constructed in the 1990s on the site of a former National Westminster Bank. The market opens on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It is famed for its black pudding stalls and is near Bury's main shopping centre, Mill Gate. The open air market is only open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday but the indoor market is open every day except Sunday
The extraordinary selection in all produce is quite formidable.
The daily fresh range of fish and seafood and the choice of meats are quite formidable.
The traditional staple diet of Bury and Lancashire - tripe, black puddings and pies.
The vast selection of clothing and footwear adds to the market's attraction, as well as the selection of cafés offering traditional food and drinks.
Not forgetting the characterful visitors.
And then on to the East Lancashire Heritage Railway located nearby; a must visit attraction, with people visiting from near and far. Sadly the steam trains were not operating on the day of our visit due the prolonged summer's dry spell causing a fire hazard from the inevitable sparks flying from the heritage steam locomotives.
The colourful restored platforms are overseen by the ever-watchful eye of the station master.
An historic diesel locomotive and period carriages taking visitors on a 10 miles trip to Rawtenstall - and back...
.......... and then homeward bound by the Metro tram for the 27 miles journey back to Manchester Piccadilly mainline station to connect with the usual TfW train back to Whitchurch in Shropshire - home to the Whitty Wanderers.
