Although now in much need of conservation. Originally, the castle was built as a fortress because of its strategic defensive location, surrounded by a water-filled moat and drawbridge.** - **1307: Earliest mention as a fortified house.** - **1380: During the Hundred Years War, Philibert de Lespinasse turned the fortified house into a castle.** - **1420: The castle then belonged to Louis de Chantemerle.** - **1524: Francis I of France spent a night in the castle on his way to** [**Lyon**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon)**.** - **1632: The castle belonged to Paul of the House of Damas, one of France's oldest noble families.** - **1703: By inheritance, the castle went to the Dyo family after the death of Jean-Léonard de Damas.** - **1722: Bernard de Noblet bought the castle, whose descendants are probably still owners, but is uncertain.** - **It was expanded to its current size in the C18th.** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/A9561DC1-BA37-4F60-9129-B1A0EB88E625_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/BFE38A29-945A-4B69-AFD9-BD6820ABB85F_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/6C201DA9-C32F-4A56-A924-376D7DFE7ADC_1_105_c-1.jpeg) ****Some of the incumbent caretakers and town characters dressing for the occasion.** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/5A012ACA-46AB-4263-88FE-38D769C0E268_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/211F7146-C82F-4051-9A69-2EA78E5F534B_1_105_c-1.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/46AD2435-8DDF-4F8D-B74D-BC577FED5D22_1_105_c.jpeg) ****Views of the Moat and Drawbridge.** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/06FF7C42-40CB-481B-B72A-F4BFF932E016_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/27C12465-458B-46B2-9ADF-239EA0F91793_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/8CF9D788-DDCC-44AB-9E3E-04CE718C28E8_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/22EF5770-0040-4A2E-9280-EBF92ECEB2DD_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/2C5AA0AC-A252-48FB-9FE0-4C048C801C63_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/30B1B97C-279F-4927-88BD-E90DA034F46F_1_105_c.jpeg) ****The Courtyards and Towers** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/393B8393-64DB-435F-8D35-09FF7CD81995_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/A690E2E8-E823-43BA-A5A4-B86C3A050A65_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/82DB4228-A8B3-485C-9151-D6D3BBC3FECD_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/380A276C-5656-49B5-8E2D-F6257898821E_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/A9EF078F-E1E3-4031-814B-2B20B34CD476_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/274CA30D-D4D6-4642-B93B-9C74561E789A_1_105_c.jpeg) ****Orangery and Stables** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/084064F3-C77A-45B1-B721-A32DA75C44B0_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/708E751F-1820-4E12-8BAB-DD7AAC4D12C3_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/C785F6B6-A763-4C50-AC7B-EAE681028B87_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/86669BBB-803C-4AB9-8F73-AC11C6D0ED38_1_105_c.jpeg) ****Entrance, Cattle Sheds, Pigeonnier and Garden Salon.** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/E597E99F-4CED-427B-A6DE-1FA12FCFBD1C_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/471F452B-BD1C-4565-8F8E-F5A71DAB6272_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/913F8FE6-2D6A-454D-885D-C9317EF0BECE_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/017520FD-B343-4CF9-B9FF-0F41D4DA9A9C_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/CCDB172F-564D-45E3-97A0-F40E491AEDAE_1_105_c.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/C4588D22-22BE-4149-9949-CE14BA2F7992_1_201_a.jpeg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/B64BBD98-5968-4174-9034-9CF9238BBBD2_1_105_c.jpeg) ****Note the old Aga!** ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/d8/25/d8251852-d7f4-41d9-bbc3-b2c76eb0c23e/content/images/2026/09/BE86786D-6959-4B05-BA82-385700713BAE_1_105_c-1-1.jpeg) **Sept'26**
